Making Room for Mud at Preschool

Editor’s Note: It’s been far too long to we took at trip to Jenny Kable’s magical land of play and learning! As always, Jenny inspires. And you know how much I love dirt and mud… :-) Bethe
Do you remember a while ago I posted about the joys of playing with mud?
Well guess what? We are getting a dirt/mud patch at preschool! Is it a teeny bit sad to be excited over a pile of dirt?
My amazing Director called us all, young and not so young, to the proposed site of said dirt patch for a dirt patch brainstorming session.
How big should our dirt patch be? Let’s measure it out in people.
How would we keep the dirt in the dirt patch?
- with walls and a gate
- with lego walls
- with logs
- with tunnels
What would our dirt patch look like? Let’s draw some plans.
One bright little soul came up with the idea of putting a water tank next to the dirt patch so that we would have water close at hand for quick and easy mud making. I like this one!

Does anyone have experience of making a dirt/mud patch? I’d love some photos for inspiration.
Stay tuned… Jenny

Love this idea! So tired of childhood being so “clean” — mud rocks!
